Sometime last year, my friend Elaina sent me this beautiful performance:
Whoa, I thought. I’ve never seen anything like that before. (I’m not one to seek out poetry)
Who are these two people? I wondered.
That lead me to watch this jaw-dropping performance, about soulmates (but not the kind you’re thinking of).
Their story made my day. And it was such an entertaining performance, I wanted more…
So I ended up watching this entire TED talk.
I just assumed that as a known spoken word poet, Sarah Kay would have no problem on stage. If she were my friend, she’s probably be the most confident person I know! But, this line in her poem surprised me:
My knees still buckle every time I get on a stage. My self-confidence can be measured out in teaspoons mixed into my poetry, and it still always tastes funny in my mouth.
It blows me away to see women who are successful but who are also unafraid to show vulnerability at the same time. Typically people see vulnerability as weakness, but it takes incredible strength to be vulnerable in a public space.
Hope you enjoyed the performances as much as I did :)
Sarah Kay got me into spoken word and she’s amazing when her and her not-brother team up. My favorite artist these days is Shane Koyczan – check him out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NBVJuA0jr6Y
